In this post I’ll share how figures are graded and the different approaches you can take to grading your action figure collectibles.

How Are Action Figures Graded?

Great question! This isn’t as easy to answer as you may think.

There are different scales used to grade statuettes. The Action Figure Authority (or AFA), who professionally grade figurines, use two different scales. Their “AFA 3-Tier Grading Scale” grades figurines produced from 1960 to the present, grading them from 100 (Gem Mint) to 10 (Very Poor). Their other scale, the “AFA Modern Grading Scale” is for items produced from 1995 to the present, grading figurines from 10 to 1. There is also the C Scale, grading from C10 (Mint) to C1 (Very Poor), which is often used by collectors when they are grading their own action figures.

While these grades might be comparable, a AFA 3-Tier 90 isn’t the same as a AFA Modern 9, which in turn isn’t the same as a C9. It should also be noted that grading isn’t an exact science. Professional grading can be relied on, but amateur grading often depends on the individual, and not all sellers are honest about the condition of their action figures.

Should I Submit My Figurines to the AFA? Or Should I Grade Them Myself?

Another great question! It depends on what you hope to achieve by grading your figurine(s).

When an action figure has been graded by the AFA, you can trust it’s accurate. If you’re buying an AFA graded figure, you can be sure it’s not a counterfeit and has not been tampered with. If you’re selling, you will probably sell it at a higher price because people trust the AFA’s grading. However, the extra money you gain because the figurine was graded by AFA doesn’t always justify the cost of submitting it to the AFA. Also, submitting takes time while it is delivered and graded, and time to safely package your action figures so they don’t get damaged in transit.

If you’re grading a figurine yourself, it’s free and relatively quick and easy. While it can be inaccurate, if you just want a rough idea of what your figurine is worth, it’s fine. Buying action figure collectibles that aren’t professionally graded comes with some risk, but most people, if they haven’t already, will provide close-up pictures of the figurines so you can carefully look at them and make sure you’re getting a fair deal.

If you’re a beginner to action figure collectibles, then this is the right place for you!

Action figure collecting is a fun and easy hobby for anyone, but its important that you understand what you want to get from it at the start, before you jump blind into a massive area! It is often hard to know the value of an action figure collectible that you find in the bargain bin, or hiding on the shelf behind another toy, and I can’t give you a magic wand. All I will say is this: Do Your Research!

The most important point to know about is, of course, the rarity of any particular figure. It is only when there aren’t many figures around that anyone will pay the big bucks! You need to pay attention to the company making the figure, when it was made, and obviously what figure it is - all information that should be easy to get from the packaging.

If you find the toy without packaging, the copyright date will often be stamped directly onto the toy, but as before - a toy out of its packaging is very unlikely to be worth anything unless it is extremely rare.

It might seem a bit daunting to have to know about so many different toys, but the secret is - you don’t have to! No one can know everything about action figures, no matter how much of an expert they are. The Difference Between Dolls and Action Figures

When you hear the word “doll,” the first thing that comes to mind is “Barbie”. The major difference between dolls and action figures is that the former is oriented towards girls, while the latter is oriented towards boys. Dolls usually include matching outfits while action figures generally include clothing and accessories that you might not see every day.

G.I. Joes, while not as muscular as the Thundercats, still looked physically fit and generally included accessories such as machine guns, knives, and grenades. Can you really argue that these weren’t designed for boys? That isn’t to say that girls never played with them, but that’s not what the marketing companies had in mind.

Other popular dolls include American Girl and Ashton-Drake, both of which are also oriented towards young girls. On occasion, some adults may collect dolls of this type, because of their realistic appearance and value, if kept in good condition.

Another classic action figure collection that may come to mind is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, whose very name suggests action, and perhaps violence. Like G.I. Joe and Thundercats, the Turtles, armor, and play sets with vehicles such as tanks and artillery-studded cars. Again, while some girls may have found the Ninja Turtles appealing, they were primarily popular with boys. The villains, too, were distorted and mutated, such as Shredder and his henchmen, Bebop and Rocksteady. Perhaps these figures were meant to appeal to the same boys that liked aggressive competitive sports and war games.

With so many different figurines about, it's difficult to know what is collectible. In this article, I'll discuss the three main factors that make a particular figurine more prized and treasured than others.

Appeal
Action figure collectibles are a passion. What makes a figurine collectible and appealing is the same thing that made children across the world plead and beg "Please mommy! Tell Santa if he doesn't get me Hans Solo I'll chew my toes off." It's the same thing that would then make parents queue in the freezing cold to buy Hans in the hope of keeping their child quiet for five minutes. While many people collect action figures as an investment, mostly it's about nostalgia and recapturing your childhood. It's the fun and excitement of playing with action figures for hours and hours in your bedroom.

Rarity
Many vintage action figures are rare because nobody thought they would ever be worth anything. If their arms and legs weren't pulled off, they probably were thrown into the trash instead. With new figurines, so many are produced that companies now make "chase action figures", which are like the mainstream figures but slightly different, with different colored clothes, for example. A limited number are made so they are appealing to collectors. There are even "variant action figures", that are different in unexpected ways, such as a white Darth Vader, which can also be rare and sought after by collectors.

Condition
Collectors can be incredibly picky about the condition of the statuette they're buying. A figure that is still as shiny and perfect as the day it was made, is much more collectible than a worn, grimy figurine without a box. While a collector may pick up an unboxed figure from a flea market, it will probably be to play with rather than to add to their main collection. Just the fact that a box has been opened is enough to significantly lower the value of an action figure. The grading scale commonly used for action figures, ranging from C10 (mint) to C1 (very poor), is just for carded figurines; if an action figure doesn't have a card, then it's not even on the scale!

War Machine Revealed in 'Iron Man 2' Poster

Towards the end of 2008's "Iron Man," James "Rhodey" Rhodes (played by Terrence Howard) looked at the early silver version of Tony Stark's high-tech armor and said to himself, "Next time, baby."

That "next time" is coming on May 7, when "Iron Man 2" hits theaters. And Rhodey will get his wish, donning the heavily-armored metallic suit that turns him into War Machine, a character that has been a part of the "Iron Man" comic books for 30 years. But getting superpowers isn't the only change for the character.

In a much-publicized contract dispute, Terrence Howard was dropped from the sequel and replaced by actor Don Cheadle. While the exact details of why Marvel Studios made the switch, Entertainment Weekly reported that Howard's original contract made him the highest-paid actor in the first film, and when the producers tried to scale back his paycheck for the sequel, Howard's representatives balked. Cheadle told IGN that he was approached for the role after Howard had already left the project, and he only had a few hours to decide if he wanted to step in.

A brief reference to the casting switch was revealed in footage director Jon Favreau screened for fans at this summer's San Diego Comic Con. In an early scene in the movie, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is being questioned by a Senate panel about Iron Man and James Rhodes is called to testify. When Rhodes' face is revealed to be Don Cheadle, he says, "It's me. I'm here. Get over it."

Of course, the moment in the Comic Con presentation that got the biggest reaction from the crowd was the reveal of Rhodey in his full War Machine armor. In the film, Rhodes takes the silver Iron Man suit to Stark's rival, Justin Hammer (played by Sam Rockwell), who outfits it with an array of weapons, including a machine gun turret on the shoulder. The preview ended with a quick shot of War Machine in full attack mode, and the 6,500 fans in attendance burst out in cheers at the sight.

So far, no official footage of War Machine has been released, but the first image of the suit debuted Monday here on Yahoo! Movies. In this teaser poster, the War Machine suit stands behind the updated Mark IV Iron Man armor.

It raises the question: are Stark and Rhodes standing together, back-to-back, in solidarity against a common enemy, or are they in opposition to each other. In the comic books, conflict between the two escalated into a feud, but later they were able to work together as friends. To find out if the two are comrades or combatants, we'll have to wait for "Iron Man 2" to arrive in theaters on May 7.
